Indigenous Marathon Foundation

The Indigenous Marathon Foundation (IMF) has been creating Indigenous leaders since 2010 through the delivery of running and physical literacy programs across Australia. We’re a health promotion charity (DGR1 status).
Founded by former world marathon champion, Robert de Castella AO MBE, our work addresses the health gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians, inspiring a ripple effect of change.
Our four key programs, include:
- The Indigenous Marathon Project (IMP)
Each year, 12 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people between aged between 18-30 are selected to train for the biggest marathon in the world in November, the TCS New York City Marathon, returning to their communities as agents of change.
- I-CAN (Communities for Activity and Nutrition)
The I-CAN program works in remote Indigenous primary schools and communities across Australia to provide children with access to fun and educational health and fitness programs that encourages school attendance and addresses childhood obesity and inactivity.
- IMF RAW (Running and Walking)
IMF RAW addresses chronic disease by normalising running and walking within Indigenous communities and provides a free, inclusive and safe environment for individuals to flourish and feel supported in.
- FrontRunners
FrontRunners is a grants and mentoring program, which extends the involvement of IMP Graduates by facilitating leadership opportunities in their respective communities.
